Chemical Peels Aren't as Scary as They Sound: Meet the VI Peel

The words "chemical peel" can sound a little intimidating.
Will my entire face peel off? Will it hurt? How long will I look like I'm shedding? And what exactly are those chemicals doing to my skin?
If those questions have ever kept you from considering a peel, you're not alone.
Chemical peels have been used in aesthetics for years to improve the appearance of the skin, but today's options can be much more approachable than the name might suggest. At The Spa at MPS, one of the peels we offer is the VI Peel, a professional chemical peel designed to address several common skin concerns and reveal fresher, healthier-looking skin.
So, what actually happens when you get one?
First Things First: What Does a Chemical Peel Actually Do?
Our skin is constantly renewing itself, but that process can become less efficient over time. Dead and damaged skin cells can accumulate at the surface, contributing to dullness, uneven texture, discoloration, and an overall lackluster appearance.
A chemical peel uses a carefully formulated solution to create controlled exfoliation of the skin.
Over the days following treatment, damaged surface layers begin to shed, allowing fresher-looking skin underneath to become more visible. Depending on the type and strength of the peel, treatments can range from very superficial exfoliation to deeper resurfacing.
And despite the somewhat dramatic name, the goal isn't simply to make your skin peel.
The goal is to improve the skin beneath it.
Meet the VI Peel
The VI Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel that combines multiple ingredients to address a variety of skin cocnerns.
Rather than being a treatment reserved for one particular "problem," it can be incorporated into a skincare plan for patients concerned about things like:
- Sun damage
- Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone
- Melasma
- Acne and acne-related discoloration
- Fine lines
- Rough or uneven texture
- Dullness
- Signs of aging
Different VI Peel formulations are available, which means the appropriate option can depend on your skin and what you're hoping to improve.
That's one reason a professional skin evaluation matters. You shouldn't have to look at a menu of peel names and figure out which formula your skin needs on your own.
Okay...But Am I Going to Peel?
Let's talk about the part everyone wants to know.
Yes, you should expect some peeling.
But it isn't usually an immediately walk out of the spa with your face falling off situation.
After a VI Peel, the skin typically begins peeling in the days following treatment as the exfoliation process takes place. The amount and visibility of peeling can vary from person to person.
Think less horror movie and more temporary shedding while your skin goes through its renewal process.
You'll receive specific aftercare instructions and products to help you care for your skin throughout the process.
And one very important rule:
Don't pick the peeling skin.
As tempting as it may be, allowing it to shed naturally helps protect the fresh skin underneath.
What Does a VI Peel Feel Like?
During application, patients may experience sensations such as tingling, warmth, or mile stinging.
The treatment itself is only the beginning, though. Unlike a facial where you leave the spa and the experience is essentially finished, a chemical peel continues working after you go home.
That's why following your post-peel instructions is so important.
Your skin will temporarily be more vulnerable as it moves through the exfoliation and recovery process, making proper skincare and sun protection especially important.
Is a Chemical Peel Only for Aging Skin?
Definitely not.
One of the reasons we love educating patients about chemical peels is because they can address concerns across different ages and stages.
A younger patient might be interested in improving acne, post-acne discoloration, or uneven texture.
Someone else may be trying to address years of accumulated sun damage.
Another patient may be noticing pigmentation, fine lines, dullness, or changes in skin texture as they age.
It's about what your skin is doing and what you'd like to improve.
What About Melasma and Pigmentation
Pigmentation can be complicated.
Dark spots don't all have the same cause, and treatments that work beautifully for one type of discoloration aren't necessarily appropriate for another.
Melasma in particular can require a thoughtful treatment plan because it may be influenced by factors such as hormones and sun exposure.
VI Peel offers formulations designed with pigmentation concerns in mind, but that doesn't mean every dark spot should automatically be treated the same way.
A professional consultation allows us to evaluate your concerns and determine whether a VI Peel makes sense - or whether another treatment or skincare approach would be more appropriate.
One Peel vs. A Skincare Plan
Can your skin look refreshed after a peel? Absolutely.
But if you're trying to address more persistent concerns such as acne, pigmentation, texture, or signs of aging, it's helpful to think beyond a single appointment.
Depending on your goals, your provider may recommend a series of peels or incorporate a VI Peel into a broader treatment plan alongside medical-grade skincare or other treatments available at The Spa at MPS.
That's where professional guidance becomes especially valuable.
Instead of jumping from facial to facial or product to product hoping something works, you can build a plan around what your skin actually needs.
Why Fall Is a Great Time to Consider a Peel
As summer winds down, many of us start noticing what months of sunshine have left behind: freckles that look darker, uneven pigmentation, rough texture, or skin that simply doesn't look as bright as it did before.
Fall also naturally shifts us into repair and refresh mode with our skin.
Because diligent sun protection is especially important before and after treatments like chemical peels, the cooler months can be a convenient time to incorporate corrective treatments into your routine.
That doesn't mean sun protection gets packed away with your swimsuit, though.
SPF is still an everyday essential - even in fall and winter.
You Don't Need to Know Which Peel You Need
If you're interested in a chemical peel but have no idea which formulation to choose, good news:
You don't need to.
You can start with the concern instead.
"These dark spots bother me."
"My acne is finally under control, but I still have marks left behind."
"My skin always looks dull."
"I want my skin to look smoother and more even."
From there, our team at The Spa at MPS can help determine whether a VI Peel - and which approach - fits your skin and your goals.
Chemical peels may sound intimidating.
But once you understand what they're actually designed to do, they become a lot less scary - and a lot more exciting.
Sometimes revealing fresher-looking skin means letting go of a few layers first.
